The iGaming Glossary

Master the terminology of South African sports betting. From FICA compliance to wagering requirements, find authoritative definitions here.

1Voucher

1Voucher is a prepaid payment method widely used in South Africa to top up betting accounts. Punters can purchase a physical slip with a 16-digit PIN at thousands of retail outlets (like PEP or Shoprite) and enter the PIN online to instantly fund their wallet without a bank account.

Accumulator (Acca)

An accumulator bet (often called a multiple or parlay) combines multiple individual selections into a single wager. All selections must win for the accumulator to pay out, but the odds are multiplied together, offering massively increased potential returns.

Aviator

Aviator is a highly popular "crash game" developed by Spribe. Players place a bet and watch a virtual airplane take off, with an increasing multiplier. The goal is to cash out before the plane flies away; if the plane flies away before cashing out, the bet is lost.

Capitec Pay

An open-banking payment solution developed by Capitec Bank. It allows punters to make instant, card-free deposits directly from their Capitec banking app using their phone number or ID number, authenticating the payment via push notification.

Data-Free Betting

A zero-rated service offered by several South African sportsbooks (in partnership with networks like MTN and Vodacom) allowing punters to access the betting site, place wagers, and check odds without consuming any of their mobile data balance.

FICA

The Financial Intelligence Centre Act (FICA) is South African legislation designed to combat money laundering and financial crime. All licensed South African sportsbooks require punters to submit a copy of their ID and proof of address before any withdrawals can be processed.

RICA

The Regulation of Interception of Communications and Provision of Communication-Related Information Act (RICA) is a South African law requiring the registration of all SIM cards. While similar to FICA, RICA applies to telecommunications, though sportsbooks often use RICA-verified mobile numbers as an initial layer of identity verification.

Rollover

A term used interchangeably with "wagering requirement." If a R100 bonus has a 5x rollover, the punter must place R500 worth of bets before the bonus funds are converted to withdrawable cash.

Wagering Requirement

Also known as a rollover, a wagering requirement is a multiplier indicating how many times a punter must play through a bonus amount before they are permitted to withdraw any associated winnings.
