What is FICA and Why Do You Need It?
FICA stands for the Financial Intelligence Centre Act. It is a South African law designed to combat financial crimes like money laundering. Every licensed sportsbook in South Africa is legally required to verify your identity before allowing you to withdraw any winnings.
While you can often register, claim a no-deposit bonus, and place a few bets without FICA, you cannot withdraw money to your bank account until you are verified.
Accepted FICA Documents
To complete the process, you must submit two things:
1. **Proof of Identity:** A clear, color photograph of your green barcoded ID book, your Smart ID card (front and back), or a valid passport. Driver's licenses are usually accepted if they are accompanied by another form of ID, but a national ID is best.
2. **Proof of Address:** A document dated within the last 3 months that shows your name and residential address. Acceptable documents include utility bills, municipal rates, bank statements (with bank stamp), or a valid lease agreement.
How to Submit Your Documents
Most modern sportsbooks like Hollywoodbets, Betway, and 10bet have an automated upload portal. Simply log in, navigate to 'My Account' -> 'FICA', and upload clear photos from your phone. Verification usually takes anywhere from 10 minutes to 24 hours.
